Phone

Phone is also a colloquial term for Telephone. Phon is a measure of sound intensity.

Within Phonetics and Phonology, a phone is

  • a speech-sound considered as a physical event without regard to its place in the Phonology of a Language.
  • A segment that possess distinct acoustic properties.
  • A particular occurrence of a speech-sound segment.
  • The basic sound-unit revealed via phonetic speech analysis.

To make it distinguishable from a language, phonetic symbology is enclosed within brackets.

The word originates from Greek φωνή, meaning "sound" and also "voice".
